Information
The North Fork American River is free-flowing upstream of this run, so boatable flows are often present after winter rains or during the spring snow melt season. Kayaks can run this whitewater river at flows from 300 cfs and up. The river has some holes that boaters should avoid and some nice playspots.
This river run is threatened by proposals to build a dam at Auburn which would submerge this great section of whitewater under the reservoir.
Access
Yankee Jim's Road to put-in (39.041000, -120.902500) and Ponderosa Way to take-out (38.999950, -120.940150) are both dirt roads, typically in good condition and suitable for 2WD vehicles. Parking at put-in is limited and can be troublesome if you get there late on a busy weekend day.
Location
This river run is south-east of Interstate-80 near the town of Colfax. (DoubleClick the red markers on the map to see the pop-up labels.)
