Horns Mill Weir is a weir on the River Lea at the Hertford Loop.

Function
Horn's Mill Weir is newly constructed (under 50 years old) weir, to take the place of the old Mill sluice which still exists further upstream.
Access
Park on Horns Mill Road, parallel to the river. There are gaps in the hedge row, with a path leading to Tanner's Crescent. From Tanner's Crescent there are numerous gaps between blocks of houses, follow this path left, upstream until you reach the weir.
Description
It is a verticle drop of approximately 2 metres, landing in a shallow concrete pool.
Running the weir is possible, but only for those who have experience running drops with shallow landing pools. There is a high risk of back or spine injury if your landing is not correct - a perfect boof, or a kayak with lots or padding at your feet is needed.
Water Levels
Low
It is possible to get out of your kayak and walk behind the wall of water. The weir's local name is the Egyptian Weir, because of the reason. The weir pool is very shallow (less than 1ft/30cm).
Medium
Medium levels do not improve the situation much. An extra few inches are gained in pool depth.
High
Very high/spate levels increase the pool level to almost 2ft/60cm. However, the towback caused by the drop is now almost 6ft/2m long, and with each side being walled in escape is not easy.
