Talk:Hand Signals

What do you think?

I had the idea of adapting Leonardo's masterpiece the Vitruvian Man as a base for hand signal images. There's no way I could draw suitable diagrams for things like this, and although photos are good it needs good light, several tries and lots of faked posing.

Anyway, here's the STOP one, and I've done others and I'll load them up if you approve. - DevAnubis 12:15, 1 February 2007 (MST)

I think that if people found the page through google say and then saw that they would get confused about what the site is about. While it is a nice idea I don't think it is an ideal solution to the problem, I think a photo would be better. I will try and get some photos up of the signals. --George Drummond 12:29, 1 February 2007 (MST)
Ok then. I thought it was cool but hey, I'm a computer buff who just enjoys playing around with [The GIMP]. ;) - DevAnubis 13:18, 1 February 2007 (MST)
Oh, here's what I was doing to symbolise motion.

  • To Me If you like I could easily add things like this to photos. Or something like it anyway. These were basically just quick bash-together during a lunch break and free at college. - DevAnubis 13:27, 1 February 2007 (MST)

The movement think does look better i think. Is there a way you could make them smaller and clearer as well. --George Drummond 14:09, 1 February 2007 (MST)

Yeh I can add arrows for direction, and really have them in any sort of style needed (and fitting them into an image like the Vitruvian Man template or onto a photograph isn't hard at all). Size isn't an issue, GIMP scale images quite well. What did you mean by "clearer"? More transparent on the image, or just clearer as in conveying the message better? - DevAnubis 01:59, 2 February 2007 (MST)
  • Ok, it's been a while, and I'm just going to add the Vitruvian-Man images. We can replace them later if we have pictures, but I want them there in some form to refer to on the page. DevAnubis 04:11, 27 March 2007 (MST)

I paddle in Washington state, and a very prevalent hand signal here is patting the top of your helmet to indicate that you (and your group) are OK. We use it as we float by people on shore who look like they may be treating someone as well as for checking on people that have just come out of a hole or such. Is this signal common elsewhere? It seems it would be confusing with the "come here" sign, which I had never heard of.

Also, as for Vitruvian Man, I think that is a really cool idea, but agree, people find images through a search engine, it may be confusing. I think putting him in a kayak would solve that. --Dblanchard 12:51, 30 October 2008 (MST)
