The U.S National White Water Center is located in the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina just outside of Charlotte. The USNWC was inspired by the Penrith Whitewater Stadium built for the 2000 Athens Olympics. When opened, it will be the world's only multi-channel recirculating whitewater river.

The center has been subject to public controversy from residents of West Mecklenburg, one boiling over to residents blocking access to the construction site. This has caused many delays in the process.

The center is due to be opened to the public in late summer 2006.
