It is a popular river with canoeists and kayakers, with many places hiring out canoes to beginners. Unlike many of England's and Wales's rivers, the Wye is a free navigation, which means that it can be freely paddled.

Its most famous rapids are at Symonds Yat

Put in from the park near Martin Street, parking in either the Leisure Centre Car Park, or the Wye Street car park, nearer the River.

After 1¼ mile, there is a sewerage outfall on the left and a private road bridge, followed by railway bridge with a small rapid below. Passage on the right.

Another 3 miles brings you to Hampton Bishop. There’s a built up bank to hold floodwaters back, and a pub, ‘The Bunch of Carrots’, but sadly, they don’t allow launching or landing.

4 miles further the River Lugg joins the Wye from the left on a right hand bend, then ½ mile brings you down beneath Holme Lacy Bridge and on to the landing at Lucksall Caravan and Camping Park on the left.

Put in from the free car park (with toilets) near the bridge in Glasbury. After a few minor stretches of rough water there are a couple of small rapids. This stretch of the river is popular with organised trips but has a few challenges depending on the rate of flow. In April there were colonies of swifts nesting in the bank and herons can be seen. The landing at Hay on Wye has a slipway and free car park - and there are loads of pubs and cafes in the town.
